Alex Hersey, LCSW

Alex Hersey is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Asheville, North Carolina.  Alex is a relationship-centered therapist who values a strengths-based approach and down to earth professionalism. He provides individual and family therapy using psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral approaches as complimentary parts. I use relational, experiential, and adventure-based therapies as a therapeutic foundation along with touches of play therapy and psychodrama.

Alex is experienced in home-based, office-based, school-based, and community-based settings. He has has extensive training and practical experience with experiential techniques in the community and in wilderness settings.

Alex attended the University of Pittsburgh for his undergraduate studies.  There, he completed an internship working with children and adolescents in an intensive outpatient program and partial hospitalization program at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center / Western Psychiatric Institute & Clinic. It was here that Alex had the opportunity to provide services to youth over multiple hours per day.

In the summer of 2008, Alex worked as a field instructor in Alaska for Adventures Cross Country.  He fostered constructive group dynamics, facilitated activities and initiatives, and oversaw outfitted activities for a group of 12 students on their journey throughout the Last Frontier. His field instructor experience helped shape his already developing path to use experiential modalities.

Alex attended graduate school at NYU and received his MSW degree in 2010.  He completed his internship at a continuing day treatment program for adults in Brooklyn, New York.  Here, he provided individual therapy and facilitated group therapy for adults in the community. He was able to bring an experiential focus to help run groups focused on mindfulness and relaxation.

Alex loves the Asheville area for its cultural diversity and offerings in nature.  In his free time, Alex enjoys hiking in the mountains, playing soccer, playing the guitar and ukulele, and traveling.
